How Do I Know When to Replace My Furnace?

When does furnace replacement make sense? It is a tricky determination for any homeowner to make. It’s not as if these systems have a definite expiration date.

Are your energy bills going up? Are you constantly checking the thermostat to see if the heat is on?

We can’t decide for you, but we can share some factors that play into a furnace’s service life. We evaluate your furnace in these areas and develop a better idea of when to replace it. Some of those determinations include:

  1. Age
  2. Again, the average gas furnace has a service life of 15 to 20 years. Electric furnaces offer an average service life of 20 to 30 years. This life expectancy is often used as a starting point to help decide when to replace furnace equipment.

  1. Maintenance
  2. How you care for your system over its lifetime plays a critical role in how well it operates. Skipping tune-ups and forgetting to change the filter could lead to problems and repairs. With scheduled maintenance, your furnace’s service life may exceed the upper limit of its service range.

  1. Repairs
  2. Has your system required several repairs over the past few years? An increase in repairs often means the furnace is very close to the end of its service life. If the repair is equal to half or more than half of the price of a new furnace, you should probably invest in a replacement.

How Long Does It Take to Install a Furnace?

Depending on the size of the unit—installing a new furnace system takes anywhere from 4 to 10 hours.

A straightforward furnace installation takes about half a day. When additional work is necessary, such as ductwork services or complicated removal of existing equipment, the job takes a few hours longer.

Availability is sometimes an issue—you are better off installing a furnace in the spring or summer than in the dead of winter!
